KHo's Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies

Okay so since my Rhabdo incident, I couldn't workout for awhile so my new hobby became cooking and baking.  When I first made these Paleo cookies, I didn't have the ingredients that I needed so I had to make a few adjustments.  I've made 3 different batches since that time and I think this recipe is a winner.  I keep getting messages asking for the recipe so I figured I'd make a blog out of it and share it with all of you!  Super easy, super yummy, super paleo!

Ingredients:
Almond Flour (I mixed some regular almond meal from TJs and some blanched from Whole Foods) - 1.5 cups
Baking Soda - 1/4 tsp
Sea Salt - 1/4 tsp
Coconut Oil (melted) - 2 tbsp
Organic Maple Agave Syrup blend from Trader Joe's - 1/4 cup
1 egg
Chocolate Chips - 1/2 cup

Preparation Method:
1.) Mix dry ingredients in bowl (baking soda, almond flour and sea salt).
2.) In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients (melted coconut oil, maple/agave syrup, egg)
3.) Combine wet and dry ingredients and mix well.
4.) Add Chocolate chips in and mix well again.
5.)  Refrigerate batter for 20 minutes so it is easier to make into balls of dough.
6.)  Preheat oven to 350.
7.)  Prep cookie baking sheet with parchment paper so cookies don't stick to sheet.
8.)  After dough has been refrigerated, roll into small balls and place on cookie sheet.
9.)  Bake for 15 minutes.
10.)  Remove from oven and let cool on wire rack.
11.)  Enjoy!!!

This is a super easy recipe.  If you have coconut flour and want to throw some in there too, I would do 1 1/4 cups almond flour and 1/4 coconut flour.  That's actually what I did to get the cookies you see in these photos.  For simplicity sake, I left the recipe above with only almond flour.

Also, if you want your cookies flatter, you can use a spoon and flatten the balls of dough before placing in oven.  I left mine as balls and they came out taller and thicker as you can see in my photo.  Do whatever tickles your fancy.  These treats should be made with love so do what your heart desires!

So here is one of many recipes that I have yet to share!  I hope you enjoy your Paleo cookies.  I know I am! LOL

Love,
Cookie Monster aka KHo

Rhabdomyolysis is no joke!!! Here's my story...

This week I was diagnosed with Rhabomyolysis.  Some of you have never heard of that term.  I don't blame you... it's actually very rare and affects maybe 0.06% of the population.  If you do CrossFit, maybe you have heard of it.  One of my friends said that out of the 3 years of him doing CrossFit, he's never met anyone who got it and was beginning to think it was a myth until me!  I'm here to tell you that it's REAL!  It can happen and it's serious!!!  What's crazier is that CrossFit even makes fun of it with a cartoon mascot "Uncle Rhabdo"!  He's depicted as a cartoon clown connected to a dialysis machine with his kidney, large intestine, and blood spilled onto the floor.  Funny?  I don't know. :/

So, what is Rhabdo?!?!  Let me explain!  It's a true medical emergency.  Rhabdo is a kidney condition that occurs when a large amount of muscle damage occurs usually induced by excessive exercise.  When muscle fibers break down, they release substances into the bloodstream.  One of these is a protein called myoglobin which can kidney damage.  Other substances released by the damaged muscles can cause chemical and fluid imbalance in the body.  Because of the damage and imbalances, the kidneys stop working correctly which can sometimes be fatal!

Now you're wondering, how did I get it?  First off, if you know me, I'm a pretty fit chica!  I workout 5-6 times a week.  I do CrossFit, Krav Maga, weightlifting, hiking, yoga, kickboxing, etc... I'm a coach, fitness instructor, personal trainer... Of all people?  Me?  Rhabdo?  You would think that someone who works out as much I do would be more conditioned and not have this happen to them.  While this is true that consistent training can protect you, it does not mean that it cannot happen to you!  What's even crazier is that actually, the fit athletes are the ones who are more susceptible to it.  This is because they are used to pushing through pain more than the average person.  I mean it's kind of hard to be an athlete and not push yourself so I hope that all of you athletes reading this, take this in and learn from my experience.  I want to tell you my story because no one should have to get to this state.  With enough knowledge, hopefully you can train safe and prevent this from happening to you.

Although rare, Rhabdo is commonly seen among military pushing their bodies to exhaustion or ex-athletes coming from from a long break and coming back too intensely.  It is common in CrossFit as well, hence the cartoon Uncle Rhabdo, and is even addressed in the CrossFit certification.  Does this mean that we all shouldn't work out too intensely?  No!  But it does mean to train smart!  If you are training and just getting back into working out hard, you should slowly build up your strength and stamina.  For someone like me who actually does consistent training, listen to your body.  Pay attention to your workouts and the muscle groups you are stressing.  This last week I pushed my triceps past a normal sore state and I'm paying for it now.  You may have heard of DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).  This is when you feel the soreness two days later.  The pain may last 2-3 days which is normal.  What is actually happening is that your muscle fibers have microtears from your workout and the rebuilding actually causes growth and strength.  This is normal.  If you've gone too far where the muscle tears are excessive so that you've caused too much muscle damage, you've hit a point where proteins like myoglobin get released into the bloodstream at high enough levels which can lead to kidney failure and possible death...  That is Rhabdo!!!  I like to think of Rhabdo as DOMS' super evil cousin!

So what happened to me?  A lot of factors come into play on my theories.  It had to have been the perfect storm to cause such a serious condition.  I'm pretty damn healthy and take care of myself but just like anyone, things happen.  I didn't know at the time but looking back, I can see where things went wrong.  The last workout I did was the CrossFit Open WOD 14.5 last Saturday.  What a crazy workout!!!  I'm actually not the only one to have gotten Rhabdo from this workout and I'm not surprised.  This workout consists of 21 thrusters (95/65), 21 bar facing burpees, 18 thrusters, 18 burpees, then 15 of each, then 12, 9, 6, 3... for time!!!  A total of 168 reps!  Holy Triceps!!! A ton of eccentric load which is what causes the most muscle damage.  Rhabdo is often seen in workouts with a lot of eccentric load such as a ton of push ups or pull ups like in Angie, Chelsea, etc.  Okay, mind you... although it sounds awful... this is my kind of workout.  Both movements I feel pretty confident that I can move quickly and efficiently.  It's a lot of reps, but I have an engine.  And I'm burpee queen.  Although most of the world hates burpees, me on the other hand... that's my jam!  So I was kind of excited.  However, when this workout was announced, my triceps were already sore... so I was a bit sad.  The thing about the CrossFit Open is that you only have the weekend to complete the workout and submit your score.  Had this just been a normal workout on the weekend, I probably would have passed on it and saved it for another day since my triceps had already been overworked earlier that week.  Remember this!!!  Do not push yourself on a workout if you feel that your muscles need to recover.  Don't risk it!  I know I know... but we are always sore!  LOL... especially if you CrossFit on a regular basis.  I'm talking about a soreness that lasts longer than 2-3 days... that's not normal.  Like I said DOMS is normal, healthy, and you're getting muscle growth through it.  I was to the point where my triceps were sore for 5 days!  That's a bit excessive so who knows, I could've already been on the verge of Rhabdo but since I'm young, healthy, and train so hard anyways, my body didn't hit that state yet.  But doing 14.5 on top, just put me over the edge.

Let me just give you an idea of the work my triceps went under that week.  So on Monday prior to my last workout, I did - for max reps, 4 min double unders, 4 min clean and jerks (115/75), 3 min double unders, 3 min clean and jerks (125/85), 2 min double unders, 2 min clean and jerks (135/95).  Now that is a lot of volume and the weights were increasing here!  It's a great workout, don't get me wrong.  I loved it.  I died after and I love that feeling.  But you can imagine the amount of stress done on the muscles.  Still safe and healthy as long as you don't pair it up with more stress on the same group too soon.  Buuuuut... what did I do the next day... stupid KHO... so on Tuesday, I did a 15 min AMRAP of 9 burpees, 7 shoulder to overhead (95/65), and 5 front squats.  Again, lots and lots of reps... same muscle group... my triceps were fried after two days in a row of a ton of pressing.  I was so sore that I rested Wed, Thurs, and Friday.  Like I mentioned earlier, I typically workout 5-6 times a week.  Resting more than a day is usually unheard of for me so you can imagine how sore I was.  So it's the last week of the CrossFit Open and then this ridiculous WOD of 168 reps of thrusters and burpees gets announced.  I think I can do it, I'll be fine, I'm just sore and I can push through the soreness.  I didn't know better I guess.  I always workout sore.  I've never had a problem yet.  But now I know that was probably not the smartest thing to do.  I gave into peer pressure.  One of the things I hate and love about CrossFit is that it pushes you to do things you would never do but sometimes it's probably better off that I didn't do it.  Well like I said, I thought I was just sore and can push through the pain... I'm sure you all have done this before.

Let me add another part of my theory to how this Rhabdo hit me.  I remember not being properly hydrated before the workout.  Hydration is crucial and being dehydrated can also increase your risk for  Rhabdo.  I was worried of having water sloshing around in my stomach since there were so many burpees going on, so I didn't drink enough water before.  I also took an epsom salt bath the day before which although helps with relieving soreness, it dries you out!!!  My efforts to relieve my soreness and treat my triceps actually didn't help me out here!  I know... super sad, right?  So it was a double whammy of dehydration right there!  I completely didn't think of it at the time.  But looking back... wow... so many factors that created that perfect storm.  This is good news for all of you though.  I'm feeding you with knowledge right now.  You can help prevent Rhabdo by staying properly hydrated and listening to your body!  :)  Oh how my future training is going to change.  I am going to drink so much more water now and I'm going to pay extra close attention to my programming as well!

I need to tell you what happened after the workout.  This is where it gets scary and maybe after you read this you'll really take this seriously!  So, I do the workout on Saturday.  I feel fine during it and after.  The next day I feel fine as well.  Okay now it's Monday... two days later... kinda like DOMS, I am really stiff... not that big of a deal.  It should go away.  I have a pretty big pain tolerance.  Although I couldn't bend my arms past 90 degrees, I should have been more worried but I wasn't.  Yes, I'm nuts!  My left arm was worse than my right.  My left was actually more sore and the one bothering me before I did the workout on Saturday so it made sense. As the day went on, I noticed it not getting that much better and the easiest daily tasks were so difficult.  I couldn't reach my face with my left arm.  I couldn't put my hair up.  I couldn't scratch my head or my neck.  I couldn't feed myself.  How frustrating and annoying.  Hmmmm... should I be worried?  I thought I was just sore still and just hoped that the next day it would get better.   That night, it was painful to sleep.  I couldn't roll over without being so uncomfortable.  The pain is something so hard to describe.  It was as if both arms were on fire!  I woke up noticing my arms swollen and still really stiff and unable to even get to 90 degrees... yikes!  As the day goes by, my range of motion gets slightly better (still not past 90)... I'm still in pain, yet still hopeful that it's only soreness and it will go away soon.  I told my coach and she helped to mobilize it and started to massage it.  That hurt like hell but I figured was good for me.  I'm not sure if this actually helped because later that night, the pain in my arm was 20 times worse than the previous night.  I couldn't move my arm even an inch without wanting to scream.  I couldn't roll over without wanting to cry.  I don't even think I slept that night to be honest because the pain was so bad.  I felt like I just wanted to chop both arms off, it was that bad!  I remember waking up Wed morning crying and sad because I had to go teach a class but I couldn't move my arms.  So I get up (not sure how I put my clothes on),  I go teach my 8:30am class (having one of my students demo everything) and right after head straight to my doctor.  I tell him about my arms and the pain and even say, "I think I have Rhabdo!"  He didn't believe me.  He said, "I don't think you would be sitting in front of me smiling and talking like this if you had Rhabdo."  I insisted on blood work and he sent me to the lab anyways.  He also recommended me to see an Orthopedic Surgeon in the meantime to get my arm checked out.  He thought maybe it was a muscle tear, a tendon tear, a fracture, etc.  So I make an appointment with my Ortho.  First available appointment was the next day, Thursday at 2pm... that felt so far away!  The day goes on and my arm is swelling up even more.  It actually felt like it was going to burst.  I have read that with Rhabdo, sometimes people get Compartment Syndrome where the muscle swells so much and the only way to relieve the tension is to make incisions in the muscle!  After reading that and feeling like a water balloon ready to burst, I'm very serious about getting this arm checked out.  My arm felt useless.  Moving it was painful so it was basically like deadweight hanging from my shoulders but with ridiculous pain to go along with it.

Wednesday night, the pain gets worse!  There is for sure something wrong with me.  This is not normal soreness.  My head goes through a viscious cycle of expecting the worst.  Maybe I did tear something?  What if I'm never going to be able to touch my face again?  What if my arm stays swollen and I can't do any upper body exercises forever?!?!  I know I know I'm crazy and retarded for thinking like that... but hey, you would do the same!  By now it's Thursday and I try to stay positive.  I'm just so happy that I get to see the Ortho today.  All I want is to know what the hell is wrong with me so I can fix it already.  2pm seems so far away though!!!  In my efforts to stay positive and not focus on the negative, I try to think of the stuff I can do that don't involve my arms.  In the event my arms are useless forever, what can I do to make me happy right now?  I haven't worked out since Saturday and working out is what makes me happy... So what do I do?  I decide to make the best of it, go for a jog around my block, do some lunges and squats.  Another thing about me... I make the most out of every situation.  I work with what I got.  It's the best and happiest way to live!  So after my mini workout, I'm the happiest I've been all week.  I actually think that getting the blood flowing helped because my range of motion in my arm improved so much that this was the first time I was able to touch my face all week!  Huge gains!!!  Although the normal person seeing my range of motion would still think something was terribly wrong, I was just amazed and ecstatic and happy since this was the first time I was able to put lotion on my face!  LOL  It's kinda of ridiculous how that small increase in range of motion got me so excited.  Things were looking up for me! Ha!  I swear things always get better before you see the doc.  At this point, I feel a bit dumb and think that maybe it was just muscle soreness after all.  I see my ortho at 2pm and he says that I have nothing to worry about.  Hooray!  He said I just need to keep drinking water and that I was probably on the verge of getting rhabdo but didn't because I'm so young and healthy.  I have nothing to worry about.  I leave the office feeling stupid yet so relieved at the same time.

An hour after leaving my Ortho, I get a call from my primary doctor.  The lab results are in from the blood work taken the day before.  He tells me "I can't believe it!  You were right!  You're CK levels are in the 5000s.  I've never seen anything like this.  Normal levels are in the 100s.  You need to go to the ER right away and stay overnight so they can monitor your kidneys!" A part of me thinks "I knew it!  I knew something was terribly wrong!"  CK stands for Creatine Kinase and the CK levels in the blood correlate to the amount of myoglobin in the blood.  This means since my CK levels are so high, there is a significant dangerous amount of muscle damage which can lead to kidney failure.  At this point, I already felt so much better... I mean I can touch my face today... so my CK levels must have dropped, right?!?! Ummm yeah, I was wrong.  I go to the ER thinking I'll get hooked up to an IV for a couple hours, flush it out... no big deal.  To my surprise, my CK levels have increased from 5000 to 15000 in only one day!  I'm shocked! 15000?!?!  But I feel a hundred times better than yesterday, how is this possible?  How I feel apparently does not correlate to the danger happening to my kidneys. Super scary stuff.  They admit me to the hospital so I can stay overnight.  I'm thinking that in one night, they can flush it out of me.  They hook me up to an IV and start with 200cc per hour of sodium bicarbonate.  That's a lot for my little body but I wanted them to do as much as they can so I can flush it out as soon as possible.  I really thought I would be good to go by the next morning.  Friday morning, my levels drop to 11000 so I need to stay the day, I can't leave just yet.  The doctor tells me if my CK levels drop later that evening, I can go home.  So now, I'm on a mission to flush it out.  I make it into a little game.  I get competitive like that.  I start drinking water in addition to the IV fluids getting pumped into me.  I peed, no joke, 8L that day!  I was on a fucking mission to get healthy and better so I can go home!!!  I didn't want to stay at the hospital another night.  I was so sure that there was no way my levels would increase that day.  To my surprise again, they went up to 12000!  I'm telling you, it's scary because you feel like you're okay but your CK levels say otherwise.  There must have been a lot of muscle damage in my tricep area.  I mean... my arm was swollen and in pain and useless!  I end up staying at the hospital for 5 days!!!  I forgot to mention that even with the vicodin they gave me, the pain was still there.  Trust me, you don't want Rhabdo... it's awful.  I'm so glad I got myself checked out and am currently on the way to normal levels.  I left the hospital with my CK levels still not back to normal but they were trending downwards so they let me leave.  The doctor said I can't workout for a week... not even a jog.  I guess that jog I did on Thursday caused my levels to go from 5000 to 15000 so yeeeaaaah I'm a bit scared to do any exercise at the moment.  For those of you who know me, not being able to exercise for a week is VERY difficult for me.  But at this point, I'm actually too scared to even do it.  I left the hospital with my CK levels at 7000 which is still scary high considering normal is below 100.  I'm just going to be super cautious this week and take it easy.  Lots of hydration, no exercise whatsoever!  And then maybe in a week from now, slowly start back up and not go too crazy.

This is really hard for me.  It's a bit annoying because everyone is telling me that I need to slow down.  As if I'm some crazy, out of control, dumb workout freak.  I'm not stupid.  I'm actually very intelligent and I do care for my body!  I have a sports medicine background, I'm a coach, I take health seriously and I know how to take care of myself.  This just happened to be an awful experience but I will learn from it and share it with all of you so you can learn too.  I'm here to spread love, health, happiness, and positivity and if I can help you learn and prevent such a thing, then I've done my job.  I don't wish Rhabdo on anyone!  It's a serious medical condition and it's painful and scary and not fun one bit!  So that's my story.  Sorry it was so long and if I bored you, I apologize.  I just had to get it all out and since I've been asked a hundred times "what happened?"... now I'm glad I can just say, "READ THIS!" :)
So what now?  I'm on the road to full recovery.  I'm hopeful and positive.  I've read so many horror stories of permanent damage to the kidneys and muscles.  Luckily my kidneys are working just fine!  I forgot to mention earlier that a common symptom of Rhabdo is brown colored urine.  So if your pee turns brown, go get medical attention right away.  I actually never had brown pee and that's probably why both doctors didn't think I had Rhabdo so I'm guessing my kidneys are just really healthy, thank God!  And now you know you can have Rhabdo even if your urine is a normal color!  It's been over a week and my left tricep is still swollen.  There's so much bruising as well because I got poked by needles all week.  My entire body has swelled up actually from all of the IV fluid.  I gained 8lbs this week!  Holy crap!  Today is my first day at home and some of the swelling in my limbs have gone down, but my left arm remains like a huge sausage.  Fingers crossed and with enough praying and well wishes from all of you, I'm sure it'll be back to normal in no time!  I will keep you all posted with my progress though.  To finish this off, I just really have to say that I'm so thankful for everyone who has reached out to me during this crazy, scary time.  You have no idea how much that means to me and I truly believe it makes the healing process go by so much faster.  I'm blessed to have such great family and friends.  The hospital visits made the time pass by faster as well.  You all know who you are who have sent me a healing message... THANK YOU!  Okay... I'm on my way to becoming a better, smarter, stronger KHo!  Just you watch!  If you have any questions on Rhabdo, feel free to ask.  I've read a ton about the subject this week and after first hand experience, I'm happy to spread my knowledge and make you guys smarter and Rhabdo-free!  May you all learn from my pain and never have to endure it! :)  KHo loves you!!!

What is Krav Maga Bag Class?

Okay so those of you who know me know that I teach and work at Krav Maga Worldwide.  KMW is
basically my 2nd family!  I've been working there for the past 12 years and I will probably continue being there FOREVER!!!   This place is THAT great!  The staff, instructors, and members are like family to me and I am so grateful to be a part of such a great community!  I'm thankful I get to work at a place that brings me so much joy and wouldn't trade it for the world!

One of the best perks of my job is teaching KM Bag Class!  You may have heard about it, read about it, saw bits and pieces of it... but if you haven't actually tried it, you are seriously missing out!  This is one of the most fun, intense, high energy, kick ass classes you will ever take!  We mix in some Krav Maga techniques... punching, kicking, elbows, knees, sprawls... with everything else you can think of that will make your body say "OMG, I am getting a killer workout!!!"  I'm talking sit-ups, lunges, push-ups, squats, burpees, pull-ups, plank, V-ups, running, Russian twists, jump-rope, mountain climbers, box jumps, wall balls, toes to bar, deck squats... I can seriously go on forever.  You not only get to work on your fight combinations and feel like a super hero badass, but you get to improve your game by doing agility, speed, high intensity, interval, and speed drills.  Your instructor will guide you so you focus your energy on giving your all on whatever the task is at hand.  You will see that results really happen when you are pushing your body further than you even thought possible... and who is there to push you?!?!... ME!  You're getting MY coaching!  You hear MY voice saying "You can do it!" "Keep going!" "Don't stop!" "Fight for it!".  Those of you who already take my class, I know you can totally see me saying all of these things!  I genuinely want all of you to be better and stronger than yesterday!

The ultimate joy comes from seeing the progress in all of my students/athletes!  Trust me, I pay attention.  I see you work hard!  I see you struggle!  I see you able to do something you weren't able to do when you first started!  Like I was saying earlier, the results really kick in when you push yourself beyond your comfort zone and I know a big part has to do with me yelling and motivating the hell out of you.  One of the best parts of my day is seeing everyone drop to the floor at the end of class! LOL  Call me crazy but it's seriously out of love!

Anyways, here's a clip from one of my classes.  I encourage you to try it out... or if you're already one of my awesome students, then I encourage you to bring a friend and spread the joy that we already have in our life!  Now go punch some bags and have an awesome day!  Kida!

KHo Fit Tip of the Day - Take the Stairs!

Okay guys, here's a simple tip you can use daily!  Take the stairs whenever possible!!!

Back in college, I remember telling this tip to Shape Magazine and they actually featured it in their magazine and gave me credit for it!  It's simple, it's a small change you can do that will affect your life, your health, your fitness in a huge way!

Just now, I came home with 5 bags of groceries!  I'm strong, I'm healthy, I can make one trip!  The thought of taking the elevator went through my mind... but then I said to myself... "Why wait for the elevator?  I can handle this!"  I took the stairs instead even with all that extra baggage!

Some of you may think I'm a little nuts but that's okay, I don't care! LOL I'm not telling you to take the stairs at the most inconvenient time... but if you're capable of it, then do it.

Everyday at work, I park on a different level... sometimes the 4th floor... but still I take the stairs!

Everyday I leave and come home, I take the stairs to my apartment!

It literally takes 30 seconds of my day to choose the stairs over the elevator!  At the end of the week, that's maybe 50 flights of stairs (and sometimes with weight LOL)... I may be lugging my heavy gym bag, purse, groceries, whatever!  It's a whole workout for some people if you think about it.

Another huge benefit... you're saving electricity!  You're helping our wonderful earth!  You're staying fit without really realizing it.  You're working out those legs.  It's easy!  Go do it!

I hope you think "KHo loves me!" next time you take the stairs! LOL  Now go have a wonderful day filled with lots of stair climbing! :)

10 Things You Can Do to Live a Happier Life

Who knew that being happy was not something that comes natural and is automatic!?  You actually have to learn how to live in such a way.  My curious self (and a psychobio major) started to read up on studies and found some very interesting insight on what happier people do differently.  Not to toot my own horn, but I'm known out of all my friends as the happy go lucky positive ball of energy and crazy enough all of the things on this list that I will be sharing are things that I do and believe will contribute to being a happier YOU!  Yes there are things day to day that get me down, but big picture... I go home and think "I'm so happy!"  I know it sounds corny but I thought I'd share this.  I want to inspire you or someone you know to take on some of these tips for a happier life.
  1. EXPRESS GRATITUDE. - When I wake up in the morning (I'm sooooo tired) but then I go teach my morning fitness class and think, "I'm so thankful for my amazing students!"  I say to my athletes, "Thank you for working so hard!  Thank you for making me enjoy my job!"  I'm thankful for living in beautiful SoCal.  I'm thankful for good music to pump me up.  These are just the things I think within the first couple of hours of getting up.  The day goes on and I seriously think to myself every hour what I'm thankful for!!!  The value of what you have appreciates when you appreciate it.  It's actually really cool!  You basically have a have a greater state of happiness if you appreciate all the things you already have in your life.  It's going to be pretty damn hard to appreciate anything if you're not already happy with what you have.  Being grateful for what is already evident in your life gives you a deeper sense of happiness... all without having to go out and buy anything.
  2. CREATE OPTIMISM. - I'm always quick to turn any situation into a positive one.  My friends make fun of me sometimes because I don't even realize I'm doing it.  It's actually pretty funny because I can take even a really awful situation and somehow see the bright side to it.  My friend's car got towed and here I am quick to say "At least you get to skateboard... that's fun!"  Someone comes into KMW where I sell memberships and tells me he's unemployed.  Instead of thinking "oh no, he has no money"... I think "Great, he has a ton of free time to train!"  Winners have the ability to create their own optimism.  No matter what the situation is, successful people will always convince themselves that there is a positive side.  They look at failure as a way to learn and grow from it.  Those who think optimistically see the world as a place packed with endless opportunities, especially when times are rough.  Try to see the good to every situation!
  3. AVOID OVER-THINKING AND SOCIAL COMPARISON. - Comparing yourself to others can be toxic!  Instead, if you really feel the urge to compare yourself... then compare yourself to an earlier version of you!  I know a few people (we all know some of these) who always compare and you can just tell they are unhappy!  It's unhealthy and I'll explain why.  If you believe you are "better" than someone, your ego grows... and boooom... the inner Kanye West is out!  You just created an unhealthy sense of superiority!  If you compare yourself and then think you're "worse," you'll start to push aside all the progress you've accomplished and discredit all of your hard work.
  4. PRACTICE ACTS OF KINDNESS. - I try to do something nice everyday, multiple times a day!  And every time I do, I feel really good about myself.  Reason behind this is that doing acts of kindness actually causes your brain to release a feel good chemical, serotonin.  When you do something for someone else in a selfless manner, it makes you feel good about yourself.  Also, just watching others perform acts of kindness can cause the feel good feeling as well.  I'm sure you've experienced this!  So it's an amazing positive cycle.  You feel good when you do something nice... and others around you feel good too.
  5. NURTURE SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS.  The happiest people are those who have deep, meaningful relationships.  In my opinion, I'd rather be poor and have my friends with me than rich and lonely.  If it wasn't for my amazing support team, I probably wouldn't be where I am today.  Having a good circle of friends to share your life with is important for happiness.  Interesting fact... People's mortality rates are doubled when they are lonely.  Stay connected and nurture those social relationships.
  6. LEARN TO FORGIVE.  Holding on to feelings of hatred has a negative impact on your well-being.  Your brain cannot tell the difference between past and present emotions.  So if you're always thinking about the hate you have for someone, those negative emotions will eat at your immune system and it will be a never ending cycle of unhappiness.  It's better to forgive and move on.
  7. INCREASE FLOW EXPERIENCES.  Flow is a state where you are completely engaged in what you are doing.  It's as if time is standing still.  You don't feel hungry, sleepy or emotional.  Your focus is turned on and nothing can distract you.  I'm basically in "flow" right now as I write this blog.  I also do this when I'm painting gloves... designing clothes for Rep Life... or teaching my Krav Maga Bag classes.
  8.  SAVOR LIFE'S JOYS.  Sometimes you need to stop and enjoy what is happening.  Slow down and take it in.  Put your phone away, forget updating your FB status, or posting on Instagram and just enjoy the magic of the moment.  It's very difficult in a world filled with stimuli to embrace life's enjoyable experiences.  Trust me, I know it's hard... I'm social media queen.  However, when I really want to take it in, I truly make effort and it's so rewarding.
  9. COMMIT TO YOUR GOALS.  Last year I made it my goal to get a muscle up by the end of the year.  I remember it being around Thanksgiving time last year and I still felt like I had so much work to do.  Early December I got my muscle up transition (basically a pull up on the rings to the bottom of a tricep dip), but was still not strong enough to press up from there.  Uggghhh how frustrating!!!  I was so determined, I practiced ring dips everyday until I finally built the strength to do it on an actual muscle up.  A week before the end of the year, I was starting to lose hope.  On Christmas Eve, I actually got my first muscle up... in fact I did 5 that day!  It was one of the most exciting things.  Being wholeheartedly dedicated to doing something comes fully-equipped with an ineffable force.  Magical things start to happen when we commit ourselves to doing whatever it takes to get something done.  When you fully commit yourself, you have no choice but to work on the task at hand.  Counter-intuitively, having no option... where you cannot change your mind... subconsciously makes us humans happier because we know part of our purpose.
  10. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY.  Taking care of your body is so important for happiness.  When you don't take care of yourself... energy levels run low... physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  When you workout consistently, you not only are in better physical shape, but you feel better and have a higher sense of self-accomplishment.  Mentally, you can focus better... and spiritually, you have higher self worth.  I know that when I workout and eat healthy, I feel GREAT!  When I take a few days off and eat crap, I feel like crap.  I start to get sad and become depressed.  My self worth goes down.  All it takes is for me to get back in my routine and I'm back to sunshiny positive KHo who wants to share happiness with the world... like right now by writing this blog for you guys!
I hope that this list inspires you to try to acknowledge the things you already do that create happiness in life as well as give you insight to things you can do on a regular basis to stay happy!  Happiness is a state of mind that doesn't come easy!  You build your character!  You actually have to work at it but it's all worth it... and to me it takes more energy to be negative than positive anyways... so it's a win win!

Listen to your body... take care of it... and it will be good to you!

Wow, it's been a long time since I've blogged!  Exactly 2 months and 3 weeks to be exact!  And in case you don't know what I last blogged about... it was about my horrible car accident and how grateful I was for my amazing support system (you guys) who helped me recover and bounce back!  Thank you again!!!
By the looks of this car, it's amazing I walked away the way I did!
Well, one reason it's been so long since my last post... I've been boring... I fell out of my routine of inspiring and motivating on the fitness side... mainly because I took a little hiatus from working out.  If you're an athlete and have had an injury, I'm sure you can relate.  Injuries are depressing!!!  Enough said, right?!?!  Last you read from my blog, I walked away from that car accident with just a few cuts, scratches, burns, and abrasions... no big deal.  No broken bones... thank god!  It wasn't until weeks later did I realize my shoulder and neck took quite a big hit.  I had headaches almost every day, multiple times a day for a few weeks.  I couldn't lift my right arm without pain.  Every day tasks like getting dressed were so difficult.  My shoulder would hurt even when I was doing nothing.  I would feel shooting pain down my arm even if I was just sitting.  Don't get me wrong... I'm still grateful that that was the worst of it!
So grateful, everyday!!!
Imagine this girl who works out for a living!  CrossFit everyday... Olympic lifting twice a week... 4 Krav Maga Bag Classes a week!  I'm constantly punching, kicking, squatting, pressing, etc.  This routine went down the drain.  I had no idea how much I loved teaching until I was forced to not do so... I mean I always knew I loved it... but seriously, teaching brings me so much joy and it didn't help my depression when I couldn't feed off the positive energy of my class during this time.  I remember my first class back from the accident.  I couldn't even demo yet... but just being in the room and running the show was so invigorating.  My class was so excited and pumped and just happy for me to be there!  To all my students, you do wonders for me!  I mean that.
Maxing on my split jerk!
Heavy OH Squats
Oly Lifting Class... always a fun time (OMG haven't been to Oly class in 3 months)
Gotta love DB Thrusters!

Okay, back to my injuries... the MRI results showed a partial tear in my biceps tendon and a grade 3 down slope of my AC joint.  The first doctor said my career of doing anything overhead was over.  "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" was what went through my mind!  I literally cried.  I know, ridiculous, right?!?!  Don't laugh!  This was beyond depressing news for me.  No handstand pushups?!?! No clean and jerks?!?! No thrusters?!?! Aaaahhhhhh I couldn't handle it.  This is something so foreign to me.  You mean I can't lift weights over head??  Say what?!!!  You mean I can't double up my fish oil supplements and solve this problem?

You know me... let's stay positive!  If this is what I have to deal with in order to come out of that accident alive then let it be.  I also had this huge red gash on my neck from the seat belt burn and I remember trying to be okay with it and embracing it (preparing myself for the small chance that it might be permanent).  People will love me for me, regardless if my neck looked weird LOL.  Thank god, it healed up nicely and pretty much goes unnoticed now.

My nasty seat belt burn.  I looked like I was straight out of a horror movie.
As for my shoulder, this injury was something I was really not used to.  My favorite exercises in CrossFit were anything overhead.... snatches, OH squats, HSPUs.  I always got compliments on my snatch.  Sounds wrong, but it's true!  My shoulders have always been so open and strong to hold weight overhead with little effort.  The arm position for OH squats felt so comfortable for me and when people would say how inflexible their shoulders were and how difficult it was for them to be in that position, I had no idea what they were talking about... until NOW!  First time in my life did I have a shoulder issue.  Uggghhh I hated it but I managed to start working out and modifying to overcome this issue.

After a few more weeks of inactivity and pain all the time, I decided to get a second opinion.  I chose not to believe that I wasn't going to be able to go overhead for the rest of my life.  This doctor made my day.  She said it might take 6 months but I will be back to normal.  HOORAY!  Most people hearing 6 months would be sad and think "OMG half a year!"  Instead, I was ecstatic and jumping for joy... "YAAAAAY 6 months!  I can live with that!" LOL  The doctor said since I was so fit, it might take me as little as 3 months!  Even better!

So I slowly started to get back into it... I started with 15lb dumbells... then 20s... then just the barbell (35lbs).  My max clean and jerk was 130lbs to give you an idea of what I was lifting before the accident.  So my workouts were so wussy to what I was used to.  There's no point in rushing and getting re-injured!  I had to be smart.  Given my Sports Medicine background, I knew how to take care of this.  I started to enjoy my baby WODs and got back into my routine.  Every workout was scaled but hey it's better than no workout.
Having fun at Reebok CrossFit BCN.

Now for some exciting news!  I believe so much in doing good and good will come back to you.  You're probably reading this and wondering where the hell I'm going with this story.  Keep following, I promise you'll understand why I had such a long lead up to the point of this blog.  Last week I booked a Reebok CrossFit gig.  Super duper exciting and I'm still in awe that I had the opportunity to shoot with REEBOK!  I went to an open casting call last Sunday for Reebok CrossFit.  They were specifically looking for non-bulky girls.  The look they were going for was the everyday CrossFit girl who is small yet super strong for her size!  They wanted toned females with a size small top and size small bottom.  Based on the size alone, I instantly thought... duhhh pick me! LOL  I kid, I kid!  No really... if it wasn't for my amazing friend telling me to go to the audition, I really don't think I would've went.  My friend told me I was perfect for it and I should just try.  The worst that could happen is they say no.  I really have nothing to lose.  I show up and see all these cute girls in sports bras and short shorts doing their thang... uuuhhh... I walked straight out back into my car.  Who am I?  Totally intimidated... thinking "why would they pick me?"  I sat in my car for a good 10 minutes, then convinced myself to go back in.  I already drove all the way there.  I knew my friend would've killed me if I said I drove there and didn't even try.  I now owe him dinner by the way!  So, I go back in and go for it.  They asked me to perform KB swings, thrusters, OH squats, and HSPUs.  Keep in mind I have not done HSPUs in over 2 and a half months!  I'm thinking "oh crap! I wish I could test out to see if I can even still do these" LOL... When I demoed the exercises, everything was flawless.  I felt good, looked good, and felt stronger than ever!  So weird!  Maybe 2 1/2 months rest was all I needed.  Either that or I just willed my mind and body to believe I was okay and that's just what happened.  I felt great!

Later that night, I get a call from the producer saying Reebok chose me and wants me back for 3 days of shooting!!!  I was in shock!  I actually booked it!  I couldn't believe it.  Little did I know, I was actually going to be working out 12 hours a day for 3 days!  I'm talking about 6 WODs a day.  It was insane!  Looking back, I loved every bit of it and wouldn't trade it for the world.  It was an amazing experience that I got to share with so many real, down to earth, cool people.  The friendships and bonds I made in those 3 days are unreal.  CrossFit really breaks down barriers.  I worked out HARD with a few other athletes and because of that, I really feel we got so much closer.

The amazing athletes who did the Reebok shoot with me.  We endured the torture together... then celebrated with burgers and alcohol! LOL
I honestly feel like I worked out more in those 3 days than I did in the last 3 months.  I was lifting more than my body was used to but at the same time it felt good to be back at it.  This shoot took place last week and that was the first week since the accident that I lifted anything over 65lbs.  It was my first week doing chest to bar pullups... it was my first week OH squatting triple digits.  It was my first week going for one rep max snatches.  OMG after the first day, I've never been so sore.  I woke up on Day 2 of the shoot as if a truck had hit my body!  Entire body so sore, my hands ripped, bruises all over... but at the same time I never felt so AMAZING.  It's seriously so unbelievable what the body is capable of.  This just shows that all my training of CrossFit for the past year and a half stayed with me.  Eventhough I took a good 2 1/2 month hiatus from lifting heavy, my strength was still there.  I could've sworn that I was getting weaker but really this proved that I really didn't lose much.  I've always read in training articles that strength is the hardest to gain, yet the hardest to lose and I'm completely understanding this now.  Cardiovascular endurance is the easiest to gain and the easiest to lose.  I'm sure you have all taken a few days off and noticed your cardio drop, but then find it easy to get it back.  I'm sure my Bag students can relate.  Compare your fitness level when you take Bag consistently to when you take 2 weeks off and get back to it.  However, strength is a whole different animal.  I've been slowly building my strength over the last year and a half.  Trying to hit a PR every week was kinda my thing about 6 months ago.  Even if it was a PR by 5 lbs I was happy.  Jumping from a 125# clean and jerk to a 130# clean and jerk was HUUUUUUGE for me!  Those strength gains are enormous and do wonders for the body.  Anyone that lifts for max knows what I'm talking about.  Just one pound can make such a difference.  Imagine lifting for max all the time, then being forced to only lift 50% of that!  It was torture for me.  I felt like I was losing muscle (which I did) but all of the training I put it in did not disappear.  The nervous system (mine and any athlete's) is enhanced with coordination training, structural work, speed drills, and power lifting techniques.  What I'm saying is that all your hard work is going somewhere.  For those of you dealing with an injury, don't rush to go back and risk getting injured again.  If you're scared of losing your skills... don't worry.  It will come back... actually it may never even leave you!  This blog is dedicated to any of you dealing with an injury right now.  You know who you are!  Be smart and come back strong.

It looks like time was what I needed.  Rest does wonders!!!  A partial tear in my biceps tendon just needed time to heal.  After 2 1/2 months rest... then being pushed to go back at it at full force, I performed as if I never even hurt my shoulder.  I'm not saying this to brag whatsoever.  If you know me, I'm here to inspire and motivate only.  I'd like to think of myself as superwoman or baby wolverine but truth is I'm just like you.  I'm a normal human being... I just have a good head on my shoulders and try to be smart and take care of my body!  Even if you're not injured, don't let your ego get to you.  So many people doing CrossFit let this happen and this is how injuries start.  Please please please be smart.  I'm scaling down for my WODs at the moment and it's okay.  I remember being so embarrassed to have to scale down... but you know what?... I have one body... it's mine... and I love it... and I want to take care of it and keep it happy.  Please remember that!  In the end, it will be good to you.  When it came down to performing for Reebok, my body pulled through!  This goes for anything in life.  Give out positivity and it will come back to you.  If you're a nasty awful human being, you can guess what will be in store for you.  Okay, I think I'm finishing up here.  Moral of the story.  Do good and it will come back.  Whether you're being good to your body or just being good in life.  I did both and it paid off! :)  Anyone dealing with an injury right now, be smart and take this in! :)
